Sex Across the Pond

filed under: Jet Sex by Lux Nightmare

This week’s issue of New York Magazine takes on one of the great debates of modern times: which city is superior, London or New York? In an attempt to decide the matter, once and for all, the magazine compares various aspects of British and American (well, London and New York) culture, from food to nightlife to the literary scene to, yes, sex.

Penned by Em and Lo, the piece mostly rehashes the same old stereotypes about Brits and sex (i.e. they’re bad at it, it freaks them out, and New Yorkers are way ahead of the curve on Brazilians, sex blogs, and speed dating). Nerve.com (and UK) expat Grant Stoddard offers up the following gem: “Being sexually inadequate is as British as tea and crumpets.”

Can it really be true? Is that hot, sexy British accent just a tease? My sole experience with British flirtation was with Mr. Stoddard himself, who, yes, does fit the bumbling Hugh Grant stereotype: but are all Brits really that bad?

There are always going to be exceptions to the rule… many, many exceptions. What percentage does it take for a stereotype to ring true, though? If 90% are at least acceptable or better, but there’s a solid 10% that are REALLY lousy, is that enough for the myth to appear and hold water? Or does that number have to come closer to approaching 50% or higher? Or does the myth come out of the otherwise prim and proper facade and have nothing to do with the actual sex?

Hmm, hard saying, not knowing. I do know that there is some really fabulous Victorian era smut that came out of England. The impression I get from reading about the period (and reading the smut) is that they were actually pretty sexual, but always were sure to be properly scandalized any time it was brought into the open. I wouldn’t be surprised if the scandal was part of a kink, though I don’t really have anything to back up the hypothesis.

On Sunday, over tea and bourbon, Suzanne Portnoy was telling us how it’s OK for two couples to be screwing on the same bed at a sex club, but god forbid you look over at the other couple.

    How British is that?

And yes, we are ahead of them on sex blogs.
