Sexerati Interviews: Shine Houston

filed under: Erotic Elite, Sexerati Interviews by Melissa Gira

I’ve been heartcore a fan of Pink & White: Porn for Pussies since I first heard glimmerings from my former peep show co-workers about what they were up to that weekend: shooting hot, hot dyke porn for a hot, hot new director. Shine Houston sits down with us over email to let us know what’s what what when it comes to dykes and their friends & lovers getting down, and on DV.

shine

Complete the following sentence: Shine Houston is… totally hot (he he). Shine Louise Houston is the founder of Pink&White Productions. She also Produces and directs each video.

What was the defining moment that made you a (we say respectfully) pornographer?
The series of events that allowed me to be a pornographer were pretty simple. I was employed at Good Vibrations where I had my first real exposure to porno. There I saw movies by Fatal Media, SIR Productions and Dirty Pillows. Through out my five years at GV it noticed a definite lack in dyke made dyke porn. So I decided to put my film degree to work and start my own film company, Pink&White Productions.

Shortly after I decided to start my company I worked with Tony Comstock of Comstock Films. That was my very first experience shooting porn. Through Tony I met Christophe Pettus who eventually became my executive producer and distributor.

So much of independent porn now is web-based. For what reasons did you choose to produce porn in DVD format, and not for the web?
I started making DVDs because that was the most accessible process. But, we are planing to expand our website. So soon we’ll have both bases covered. People who like a physical tangible product, like myself, will still be able to buy the DVDs and we’ll also have a membership site for those who like the ease of online content.

What kinds of porn have turned you on, turned you off, and otherwise influenced your choices as a creator? What other media influences your work?
Well…what I really like is gay male porn. My favorite gay porno is The Hole, which is brilliant, Mardi Gras Cowboy and Kansas City Trucking Company. Tony Comstock, who runs the gamut of straight, gay and lesbian is an amazing film maker. He is able to translate the passion of the couples he films to the screen like no one else. I’m personally not fond of Girl-Girl porn. It works but its not really reflective of my own tastes, which is a big reason why I started making my own porn.

I get a lot of inspiration from listening to music. I also get ideas from other movies. Right now I’m watching a lot of boxing movies. I suppose that’s a hint to what my next video is about.

How would you describe the atmosphere on a Pink and White set?
Being on set is relatively chill. I don’t like waking up at the butt crack of dawn so call time is usually pretty decent. I only shoot one sex scene a day so I can dedicate all my attention to that scene. So far the crew members have all been women and trans men. That right there makes for a very different feel on set.

What do you look for when you hire a performer?
I look for a genuine interest in doing porno. I don’t take anyone who’s iffy about it. Appearance is obviously a factor and I try to choose people that represent the different facets of the queer community. Butches, femmes, bois, andro and everything in between.

Overall, what has been most challenging about working in porn?
Keeping up with the 2257 laws.

What indelible mark do you wish to leave behind in sex culture?
I’d like to continue to help build a strong presence for queer porn and help raise the bar on the visual language of the porn genera itself.

What’s next for Pink and White?
Big things. We’re expanding our website and planing a full feature, with more amazing sex, more gender bending and other surprises.

And lastly: what, in your opinion, is the most important part of a healthy sex life?
That you like the sex you have and its safe sane and consensual.

Must be some sort of sympathetic vibe thing, because I’m sitting here doing sound work on a film and thinking about how much I admire Shine, when ‘boing’ my technoratic feed tells me somewhere on the interweb someone said “tony comstock”. Well what do you know. It’s Shine saying my name right as I’m thinking hers.

I’m not surprise. From the first 10 minutes of meeting her, I knew Shine was one of the people who “got it”. What is it? Well hell if I know, but I know that Shine gets it.

Now the scary truth. (Scary for me, at least.)

Shine is a better filmmaker than I am. As experienced? Well no, not yet, but she’s making up the ground fast. But experience and (maybe) cunning aside, I’ve got nothing on her. She’s smarter, more creative, more daring, more ambitious. And right now she’s the world’s best hope for a director who will finally deliver on the long-delayed promise of what sex on film could be.
