(Un)Dressed is the latest project from recent UCA Epsom graduates, stylist Rachel Dawson and photographer Laura McCluskey. The duo teamed up to create a 143-page hardback book of photography, exploring the ideas behind hyper-consumerism.
Their year long research took them from Primark to Selfridges, and as far as a mannequin factory in West London. The book comprises of shoots inspired by various aspects of societies’ spending habits, the fashion cycle and the short life span of a typical trend, for example ‘Seams’ highlights how fashion is predisposed and disregarded by the consumer. Laura says, “If you look at the seams, they look like the bones of the garment, the skeleton and what is left of it. If you take away the fabric, trends and garments are the same”.
The layout of the book is simple yet effective, highlighting the importance of each statement and giving each editorial the chance to make its own impact on the reader. From creating their own ‘trendmonster’, to making garments from black sacks, the book comments on the fast intake of fashion and explores what could happen next.
The pair will be at Graduate Fashion Week from today onwards and for more information go to rachel-dawson.com or lauramccluskey.com
