It’s a shimmering sludgefest with the all too distinct vocal presence of Mr.Tobi O’kandi. It leaves us more than excited for the album release via Deadly People on May 28th.

YOUR PIECES HAVE AN AIR OF FUTURISM VERSES TRIBALISM – ESPECIALLY WITHIN THE JEWELLERY – WOULD YOU AGREE THIS BEING AN ACCURATE STATEMENT?

- I do agree with the statement, although it’s not something I actively try to create or research it just happens, I guess this is just my personal handwriting and taste

WORKING WITH YOUR PIECES – WHAT FASCINATED MYSELF AND THOSE I WORKED WITH MOST IS THE DETAILING AND MATERIALS USED WITHIN SUCH A STRUCTURAL APPROACH – WAXED DRESSES WITH BEADED HEM LINES, FUR & FELTS WITH MESHED MATERIALS, SMALL BEADS WITH LARGE PERSPEX PIECES … WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES YOU WORK WITH SUCH, ALMOST JUXTAPOSING, MATERIALS?

- I like working with contradictions as I find that these always seem to have the most unexpected and interesting results. I like working within the construction too as I do think the design shouldn’t only just be on the outside of garments, it’s nice to let the wearer into a little secret (previous examples being tinsel in trouser waistbands and mini hinges trapped between T-shirt layers)

WHAT SORT OF CONCEPT ARE YOU TRYING TO CONVEY WITH YOUR CLOTHING – WHAT DOES THE KIRSTY WARD BRAND STAND FOR?

- The brand is about directional clothing and jewellery that is experimental yet still wearable, I also like to blur the lines between the garments and jewellery, and last but not least I want my work to have an element if fun in it!

AFTER GRADUATING YOU WERE SNAPPED UP BY ALBERTA FERRETTI, WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THIS DRAMATIC STEPPING STONE?

- Working for Ferretti I learnt more about adding a little femininity into my work, and how things worked in a huge company where they had their own factories too, that was really interesting

YOU HAVE WORKED ALONGSIDE DAVID LONGSHAW, WHO ELSE WOULD YOU IDEALLY LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH AND DO YOU HAVE ANY FROTHING COMING COLLABORATIONS IN THE PIPELINE?

- Working with David is great so its nice that we have a collaboration that continues season upon season. For S/S 2012 I have an exciting collaboration with the underwear brand – mint siren, this will fit well into my collections as I always like working with sheer fabrics.

WHAT ARE WE TO EXPECT FOR THE NEW COLLECTION?

- For S/S12 I’m inspired by mundane offices, stationary, experimental cutting and suspended layering.

YOU ARE GOING FROM VAUXHALL TO THE SOMERSET HOUSE EXHIBITIONS THIS COMING FASHION WEEK – HOW HAVE THE PREPARATIONS DIFFERED?

- They will be rather similar, although I’m doing a short film this season so things will be more geared towards that.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A BUDDING DESIGNER?

- Know your shit, do lots of research (for your own work and also into other designers), always think about construction, always stay relevant.

WHAT ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS?

- Turning bad taste into something desirable, mundane everyday items – such as hardware

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE REST OF 2011?

- I am shortlisted for this years global fashion awards – the event is in October, so we will see what happens there, although it’s such an honour to be shortlisted, other than that just staying out of mischief!

One of the more darker moments in French history during Nazi occupation Vel’ D’ Hiv is depicted in the film adaptation of Tatiana de Rosnay’s best seller: Elle S’appelait Sarah. Kristen Scott Thomas plays a journalist who whilst writing a piece about Vel D’ Hiv becomes fascinated with the story of Sarah Starzynski, a young girl who was unable to escape the French police gathering Jews.

All Holocaust/Second world war films are distressing. ‘Sarah’s key’ will undoubtedly be compared to ‘the Pianist’ and ‘The Reader’ for it’s portrayal of the terror through individual tales. It also highlights and brings forward France’s role. The shameful duties of the police and the sympathetic, compassionate acts of French citizens. Like with the ‘The Reader’ youth and responsibility come into focus and immense guilt. It’s hard to really grasp the idea that one government would take such means to try to eradicate a group of people from their society. Cinema has been used as an effective tool to address a moment that still needs attention but it can also be harrowing and unpleasant.

Through following close individual stories viewers are able to digest a large scale disturbing massacre with a close identifiable and sympathetic pace. Kristen Scott Thomas’s role as Julia Jarmond, a writer who becomes obsessed and consumed with the Sarah’s story, is beautifully played and her subtle performance help’s ‘Sarah’s Key’ stay a serious, emotional but historical piece of cinema regarding the Holocaust rather than moving into melodrama territory. Melusine Mayance is outstanding as the young Sarah showing a depth and range as young actress far greater than her child years. ‘Sarah’s Key’ succeeds in conveying the mass genocide of innocents and it’s brutal fashion, underlining the physiological affect of survival guilt and reminds audiences of the catastrophic consequences of ignorant ideas.

Sarah’s determination to survive in order to return to save her brother is well acted. The guilt she feels for her faultless part in his demise is so tense, it transcends into Julia Harmond’s life years later. However the film unfolds in an erratic pace, sliding back and forth between to narratives and period which can be distracting. This may have worked much more cohesive way in the novel. The coupling of Julia’s domestic problems and displacement at her job is often a distraction and can seem trivial in relation to Sarah’s plight. Perhaps Julia’s role as a character is to address how we can be consumed by small pursuits of modern day life.

Obsession – the seemingly defeatist confession.

and nothing less then our consuming passions:

The infatuations that create great master pieces,

that underly all enthusiasm for concepts and creativity.

various point and shot methods working primarily on 35mm, have been

The journey has been a long one – but officially,

Issue Three – ‘The International Issue’ is now live and online.

A plethora of talents – ranging far and wide,

from exclusive interviews with the likes of Blake Witman from the head team at Vimeo,

masterful work from artist masterminds NOWHEREFACTORY…

to insights from the down under to the Asian heights…

Introducing:

____________________

The International Issue.

The perception of the modern day is to be in existence at the highest form of communication – thus connection.

We are continuously discovering and unveiling new territories,

through persons incidents, phenomenons…

However it is a common conception to feel isolated – uninspired…

Are we loosing sight of true connection?

With the administrators of the ‘suggested’ and ‘we thought you might likes’ narrowing our initiative to explore,

our journey is mapped in accordance to our ‘likes’ -

but with this the element of discovery is cut short.

Culture is the essence of internationalism – be it local, remote, global

let us not forget that for a real notional link to be connected,

it is not to forget the roots of those that may be placed in the same street or the other side of the world

but take sight and embrace their whereabouts & influences…

As culture is what moulds our characteristics and our ability to evolve

To be international is a state of mind

a pilgrimage of discovery, experience & knowledge.

———

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.”

-Mark Twain

*Special thanks to all the contributors, supporters, followers, those concerned – and kept faith.
