I’m a massive Hyperdub fan. Well, I’m of modest dimensions but ever since ‘9 Samurai’ and the imprint emerged in 2004 no other label has been pioneering dubstep with quite such exuberance, most notably epitomised by Burial’s flawless album Untrue, 9’s Memories of the Future and Ikonika’s Contact, Love, Want, Have. Nowadays one would have to live on the moon to let a Hyperdub released slip through unnoticed.

Visualise my reaction to label boss Kode 9’s addition ‘You Don’t Wash’ to the K7! compilation series DJ-KiCKS sitting pretty alongside Martyn & Actress remixes. Pure post-watershed excitement, which was sadly short-lived. The track’s good, capturing the essence of UK bass seamlessly blended with a primal rhythm, but it lands short of Kode’s doom-bringing vision. I imagine cavemen spinning ‘Ghost Town’ or ‘Black Sun’, but not this one.
