I’ve been to Cable once before to catch Bullion and Paul White DJ. My most prominent memory of the night is not disappointment but curiosity regarding the lightweight crowd. Cable’s an accommodating club in a prime location, but for a Friday night the atmosphere was less than vibrant. However, it’s easy to jump to conclusions with limited exposure. So when I caught wind dub/techno pioneer Scuba was playing his first UK live show there I didn’t waste any time.
Founder of visionary label Hot Flush, Scuba’s second album Triangulation is tipped for album of 2010 and we’re on the cusp of Mount Kimbie’s first album bearing the Hot Flush imprint. So you’d expect to find heavy security struggling to hold off an exuberant hoard of fans. Yet as Scuba crafts fitting suspense with an eerie introduction the crowd remains sparse. A string of instant classics follow from his new album, but it’s not enough to create a deserving atmosphere. I find myself heading to the exit before the closing tune drops, hoping for a more enthusiastic crowd at his next show.
