In my preceding review on Sepalcure’s Love Pressure, I touched upon the emergence of producer partnerships. It’s certainly a modern idea. I’m not familiar with the intricacies of dual composition but Mount Kimbie duo Dominic Maker & Kai Campos have demonstrated true versatility with their debut album Crooks & Lovers. Released on Scuba’s Hotflush imprint, the album transcends between melancholic guitar licks and abstract beat progressions that highlight the pellucid creative direction between the pair.
Some may find the release inaccessible in the first instance. The first few tracks amalgamate unhinged creativity with an indiscriminate verse structure to craft a seemingly ambivalent soundscape. One quickly realises the brief introduction sets the framework for an honest, interpersonal atmosphere that connects seamlessly with the listener, leaving it impossible to overlook the sheer vibrance of the album. A truly unique foray into digital audio.
