Whoever said that hip hop was dead, they did not realize that it went underground instead. How I Got Over is the 11th studio album of the Philly neo soul/jazz rap band. This album has been a work in progress for quite a long time now and after its release date was pushed it just seemed too good to be true that all six members could offer the music scene something better than they already have provided in the past years. Obviously, time puts everything in perspective and this album is part of the raw talent that makes The Roots not only musicians but performers and entrepreneurs. How I Got Over which is set to be released the 22nd of June is everything but an average album, it is a homage to freedom and the changes this generation is going through, more from the perspective of the native USA artists seeing a brighter future with the Obama administration; opening a future full of choices for the young minds.
The 14 track long album is fresh and vivid with collaborations of Monsters of Folk and Joanna Newsom under other talented artists. Each track is different to the previous one merging in an eclectic mix of harmonies and music genres, r&b, jazz and funk are palpable and most importantly, the extremely insightful lyrics that are what hip hop is about anyways.
How I Got Over is an incredible piece of work, the overall result is more than satisfying bringing all those music lovers closer to a sound that is real.
