HOW TO: Sex Blog, Part 1, A Sex Blog Taxonomy

(This is part one in our series on HOW TO: Sex Blog. You ought to start with the Introduction for all the pithy theory, really, and then onward to the snark interjected here and there with actual advice.)

You can relax. This is not some “What Sort of Sex Blog Are You?” quiz. For that, please direct your attention to any number of blogs written by people with unnecessary underscores in their usernames over at LiveJournal.

And this is not to hate on LiveJournal. If it weren’t for LiveJournal, sexblogging as we know it just wouldn’t be. (Overcompensating full disclosure: yes, I am LJ user #2501.) LiveJournal was actually the place to find sex in blogs, back when blogging was largely the domain of the people who were developing the blogging tools themselves. Though some of them now admit to also keeping secret blogs, which no doubt are at least a little smuttier than their more obviously branded blogs, very few “a-list bloggers” blog about their actual sex lives (or sex acts, period), and a sex blogger has yet to crack what most people would consider the A-list — likewise, we don’t doubt that those folks up in the Technorati 100 aren’t sex blogging, we just can’t point you to the list.

(Well, yet.)

So that itself — profit & blogebrity — might be your goal in sexblogging, or not — but really, internet fame is overrated, and totally fickle, and largely unrelated to anything you can, say, deposit at a bank or write home to mom about. On our cynical days, we might be tempted to posit that the sex bloggers who actually did strike it rich did it armed with marketing departments, but honestly, it seems like most of us just stumble into sexblogging because we write about sex on our blogs, and that’s what internet people call blogging about sex.
