Rode Hard, Put Away Lubed, Rode Hard Some More

December 12th, 2005 by Melissa Gira

A loving, slashy fan over at the bitchy gossip revival, Oh, No They Didn’t! has launched this line of Jake/Heath merch for everyone to declare their fag-haggy love.  Of course, to the dykes among us, this is all somewhat retread.  Any critic who still doesn’t get why getting queer on screen is not only a career boost but a serious clit-stiffener for loads of women need only refer to Susie Bright’s absolutely appropriately queeny retort:

… in Newsweek’s story on the film, a unnamed Hollywood “producer” says that Jake Gyllenhaal is committing career suicide by playing a man in love with a man— that his core teenage girl audience will desert him. This jackass has obviously never come face-to-face with a pajama party in his entire life. Teenage girls love handsome young gay lovers— even more than handsome young gay lovers do. James Dean… Sal Mineo… Sigh. The Heath and Jake sandwich fantasy is already a TigerBeat swoonfest for the ages.I hope this movie exposes, once and for all,  that there are just as many woman hot for men in a tight embrace, as there are men mooning over lesbian fantasies. Many critics I’ve read suggest that straight women will be sympathetic to Brokeback Mountain because they’re  a bunch of old softies, with tender hearts. They don’t seem to understand that while tender is fine, for female fans, this movie is arousing. It’s not charity, it’s lust and romance with a bullet.

Covering even more of the queer spectrum is Sacchi Green and Rakelle Valencia’s Rode Hard, Put Away Wet, an anthology of lesbian cowboy erotica — “No urban cowboy crap. No wannabe Yahoos. This is authentic, get-real, can smell and feel the leather and taste the grit, “working” cowboy lore.”

Because out here in the open smut country, with our harnesses and chaps, we can all be cowboys.  (Hot, ambiguously-sexually-oriented movie stars optional.)
